No matter what sport you play, receiving an athletic scholarship to compete at the college level is the ultimate goal for most student athletes getting ready to take their athletic careers to the next level. College isn't cheap- and there is a lot of confusion about which athletic associations give aid to athletes. Don’t worry- we’re here to clear up some of the confusion.
Who Gives Out Athletic Scholarships?
Are full ride scholarships for all 4 years? No, athletic scholarships are typically one year agreements between the college and the athlete, although some are multi-year. Scholarships are offered at the NCAA division 1 and Division 2 level, NAIA, and NJCAA but not offered at the NCAA Division 3 level. In total there are over 2,000 colleges and universities that offer athletic scholarships to incoming student athletes.
Maximum Number of Scholarships in Each Athletic Association?
Out of the 2000 schools that offer aid, there are a plethora of scholarships being given out in select athletic programs. The data below shows the maximum number of scholarships that are given out among each athletic association. As you can see NCAA Division 1 gives out a whopping 74,243 scholarships to its student athletes while NCAA division 2 gives out none. Overall the 177,559 scholarship opportunities are available to incoming athletes.
What's the Likelihood of Getting into the Division I Want?
Good news- there are a multitude of athletes getting to play in their division. According to the data below the number of students within all the athletic associations in total is a whopping 517,819 thousand with the NCAA division 3 and division 1 being the highest associations with the most athletes
